The Compton District History Society was founded in 1997 by a group of local enthusiasts and as the name implies, serves not only the people of Long Compton, but also the surrounding villages and towns such as Moreton in Marsh and Shipston on Stour.
The aim of the society is to ‘increase understanding and history of Long Compton and its vicinity’. To this end the society invites as many speakers as possible to give presentations on topics of local interest, but also arranges some talks of a wider interest. Visits have been arranged to link in with talks and more are planned for the forthcoming programme.
The society is very fortunate to have the loan of the historic Lychgate from the Church, in which to store the archives of the History society and these are continually being enlarged. The Lychgate is opened on several afternoons during the summer, (usually to coincide with the serving of teas in the church), and we welcome visitors both local and those passing through.
The society meets 8 times per year on the second Wednesday of the month, (excluding December and January, July and August), at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. New members are always welcome, either to join for the year or to attend as a visitor.
The programme for 2009/10 is below and is also available on our Diary Page. For any further queries please contact:
